Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of Kent Wharf was undertaken. Documentary and cartographic evidence indicated that the site lay outside of Roman London. Haggerston was probably established as a small settlement in the Saxon period and remained open fields until the 19th century. It quickly developed as an industrial area with crowded and poor-quality housing following the completion of the Regent's Canal in 1820. Kent Wharf was constructed beside the canal in the 19th century. Second World War damage may have occurred. In the modern period the site has been used as an open timber yard. The site had low archaeological potential and no mitigation was likely to be required prior to development. [AIP] |
