Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken in connection with the proposed construction of a single building with car parking. Archaeological remains visible within the development site consisted primarily of the mid-19th century reservoir and associated structures, with 20th-centruy alterations to site access and a Second World War air raid shelter. However, it was clear that the course of the 16th century Plymouth Leat lay within the western edge of the site, and the curved wall observed during a site visit might have been part of this structure. Although no medieval or prehistoric features had been observed, there was the possibility of earlier buried remains surviving within the site area. Similarly, although no countermining galleries were known to extend from Crownhill Fort in the direction of the site, there remained the slight possibility of such a structure within the site area.
