Abstract: |
The site lay on a reclaimed area of lane next to the harbour. Deposits of the walls of two buildings and associated cobbled surfaces survived from the 17th century, when the site was probably used by the Navy. Evidence for the remodelling of these buildings and the construction of the third building in the 18th century was also apparent. This activity probably related to the conversion of the isle to a prison, as did the discovery of communal graves at the east end of the site. Remains of 19th century activity were also observed.
