Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during the excavation of the foundations prior to the construction of a house and was carried out in order to fulfil a condition upon planning consent. This recorded very little of interest with the exception of several areas of disturbance. The most obvious feature was a shallow pit filled with dark organic soil and occassional brick debris. A second feature was observed which was filled with redeposited chalk and occasional brick and tile fragments. Apart from ocassional 19th century building material the site was devoid of any datable ceramics. It was concluded that there were no indication of the presence of any pre-modern pits or features. This was possibly due to the truncation of the site over the last 2 centuries or may alternatively have been due to the fact that the area was relatively lightly settled during the medieval and post-medieval periods. The site did not appear to have been built upon until the late 19th century. [Au(adp)] |
