Abstract: |
Four trial trenches were excavated in relation to the demolition of the existing buildings and the construction of new buildings. A single sherd of residual Saxon pottery was found in a later context and an undated pit had the appearance of a Saxon cesspit. No horizontal Saxon deposits were found, nor any evidence for medieval activity on the site. A number of 17th century brick wall foundations and an associated drain and cesspit were recorded and were part of 'Wild House'; a large private residence built in the 1630s. To the rear of the remains of the house there was evidence of the associated 17th century formal gardens. The natural slope in the brickearth had been levelled by substantial dumps of 17th century material prior to the laying-out of the formal gardens. Brick wall foundations of the subsequent 18th century development of the site were also found. [Au(adp)] |
