Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was held over works at Tamworth Castle bailey. Numerous pits and trenches were excavated for lamps and electricity cabling. Despite early modern intrusions there was a high level of survival of significant medieval and post-medieval archaeological deposits within the remaining western portion of the former castle bailey. This was in marked contrast to the destruction which took place in antiquity in the eastern portion of the former bailey. Post-medieval demolition layers were thought to overlie and intersect the remains of medieval structures, as was particularly shown in one of the trenches excavated. Comments on the vulnerability of the archaeology on the site, and suggestions for its management were put forward. [AIP] |
