Abstract: |
<summary>A watching brief was undertaken during repairs to a stretch of collapsed riverside wall in an area adjacent to Newark Castle protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Nottinghamshire No 3). A limestone wall, on a similar alignment to a wall recorded during excavations in 1984, of probable 14th century date at the latest, and possibly part of a previously unknown riverside town wall still standing in the 17th century and incorporated into the Civil War defences, was recorded. A pitched stone surface of probable post-medieval date sealed a cut over the wall. {italon}AIP{italoff} |
