Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks at a development site which lay 10m from Colchester's town wall. Scope for inspection was limited. It was found that much of the Priory Street frontage was occupied by the cellar of a recently-demolished modern building; nothing of significance had survived in this area. Removal of the west wall of the cellar revealed natural sand, whilst demolition of the north wall exposed the front and rear walls of an adjoining early brick cellar, noted in a previous evaluation. No clear evidence for the location of the town ditch was observed. [Au(adp)] |
