Abstract:
All three buildings on the site were Listed Grade II. No archaeological deposits had previously been found across the site however evidence for the immediate vicinity of the site suggested it may have remained as open ground for most of the Roman period and there was no evidence for Saxon occupation in the immediate vicinty of the site though Old Broad Street and Throgmorton Street may have had a late Saxon origin. Documentary sources for the area around the site suggested that there was a sparse population and large plots of open land indicating relative poverty. Near to the site had been a synagogue which developed into almhouses, a Grammar school and a large Abbot's House. Immediately to the north lay a Augustinian Priory founded in 1253. The report concluded that the proposed works would involve the removal of significant archaeological deposits of all periods which would have survived beneath the modern building slab. However, due to the limited size of the holes which would be opened up, the report recommended that an appropriate mitigation strategy would be the carrying out of an archaeological watching brief during the proposed works.
