Abstract:
A magnetometry survey was undertaken prior to the proposed extension of the caravan park. The archaeological assessment had discussed the archaeological potential of the area, in particular the significance of the discovery of Early Bronze Age cist inhumations. Relatively modern 19th century field boundaries were detected, together with associated farm tracks. Examples of ridge and furrow were also detected, although a medieval origin could not be ascribed. Many linear and curvilinear features were detected, which may have had a prehistoric origin. These features included a double row of post holes with a central longitudinal pit, possibly of prehistoric funerary origin. Another suggestive feature was a boat-shaped anomaly, some 30m long. Diverse other anomalies were detected including curvilinear ditches and banks, which may have warranted investigation. Evidence of possible prehistoric activity was also identified in Field 2, in the form of a possible Bronze Age round houses, perhaps associated with linear ditches. Elements of substantial ditches of unknown origin were detected in the northern sector of this field. Putative prehistoric ditch systems with associated pits were also distinguished, together with a possible small barrow within Field 3. Evidence for cist burials was detected, although substantiation was far from equivocal. The entire survey area contained numerous pits and bipolar anomalies, many of which must have been of relatively modern origin, perhaps associated with small-scale extraction of coal. A number of features were identified which should be investigated by test pits or excavation trenches. [Au(abr)]
