Abstract: |
Four trial trenches, three within the walls of the standing building, were excavated across the site as an archaeological evaluation. Within trench 3, located near to the corner of the High Street and Mint Walk, a series of flint, stone and chalk walls were found which probably date from the 16th to 17th centuries. These structures were presumably related to tenements aligned along the High Street frontage. The other three trenches contained 19th century soil horizons and modern pits. An assemblage of 16th century pottery was found within a 19th century make-up layer in trench 2. A rare 16th/17th century bone handled razor was also found during the evaluation, within the fill of a small chalk-built 'cellar' in trench 3. [Au(adp)] |
