Abstract: |
The excavation of a trial pit was carried out at the east end of the cathedral. The work aimed to determine the cause and nature of a hole which had appeared close to the eastern end of the Lady Chapel. Upon removal of the turf layer, the skeletal remains of five individuals were observed . These were cleaned and recorded but left in-situ pending a decision from the architect and main building contractor. It appeared that the hole was created by the scouring effect of ground water running along and under the footings for a paved area immediately to the east of the Lady Chapel. [Au] |
