Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site in advance of the proposed demolition and new development for continued commercial use of the site. The report considered the potential archaeological remians on the site, and the likely impact on these of both the proposed and previous building developments. The report indicated that the site had very limited potential for the discovery of archaeological remains from the prehistoric, Roman, and medieval periods, and that the majority of the known archaeological remains and documented structures were associated with St Jame's Square itself and the urbanisation of the area from the later 17th century onwards. The archaeological potential of the site had been significantly redueced by the present basements which were 3-4 m deep and therefore likely to have removed the original made ground/archaeological stratigraphy. The report recommended the checking of these conclusions on site (e.g. via observation of any planned engineers' trial pits) to establish whether the existing basements were founded into natural gravel, but at present no further archaeological measures beyond this appeared to be called for.
