Abstract: |
The Higher Barracks were constructed during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars on a site which lay 200 metres east of the medieval siege castle of Danes Castle which was excavated in 1993. The '93 excavations recovered finds which were indicative of a Roman settlement in the area. A documentary search, rapid building survey and magnetometer survey were undertaken on the site. The documentary search identified that the site lay close to and possibly on the site of Danes Castle, erected by king Stephen during his three month siege of Exeter's Rougemont Castle in 1136. A magnetometer survey also identified areas of possible disturbance within the development area. [AIP] |
