Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed office development at the western end of Courage's Brewery site identified that that the proposal area lay mostly to the north of a medieval thoroughfare known as Tucker Street, an area used for tucking or fulling by the 13th century at least, and lay a short distance to the west of the bridge presumed to have given Bristol its name. During the post-medieval period, brewing, distilling, warehousing, dyeing, soap making and sugar-refining took place on the site, and many of these activites were likely to have left subtantial below ground remains.
