Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the seeking of planning permission for residential redevelopment. Cartographic and historic evidence indicated that the site lay in, or close to, the historic core of the medieval and early post-medieval settlement. This part of the High Street was occupied at least as early as the 1740s and this was reflected in the inclusion of the site within an 'archaeological interest area' in the Borough Unitary Plan. A small number of finds of earlier periods (prehistoric and Roman) were present in the general area but the chances of locating significant deposits for these periods on the small site was remote.
