Abstract: |
Small-scale excavation on the ground floor of the Rural Life Museum East Wing examined a woodblock floor revealed by earlier building works, and exposed a brick wall footing beneath it. It was possible that the wall formed part of the original plan of the workhouse (1776-7) and that it was demolished and sealed by the wooden floor during major alterations carried out in the mid-19th century in the years after the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act.
