Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during excavations relating to refurbishment works at Staple Inn Hall, a Grade II Listed Building. The earliest mention of the 'Stapled Halle' dated from 1292, referring to a market hall close to the present site. The word 'staple' was thought to have referred to the wool staple, or tax, introduced in 1275. A new hall had been constructed to the west of the original building in 1580. This had later been adapted and added to, but had been destroyed by a bomb in 1944. The hall had been reconstructed in 1954, making use of original materials where possible. However, it was not known to what extent the existing foundations and cellars had been cleared to make way for the replacement building. During the watching brief, no archaeological deposits were revealed. Observations suggested that the wartime damage and subsequent redevelopment had destroyed much, if not all, of the archaeological resource. [AIP] |
