Abstract: |
A desk-based study and field-scanning survey was undertaken to investigate the archaeological implications of the proposed widening of the A1(M) from Junction 1 to Junction 6. A total of 71 archaeological sites or findspots of varying date and quality lay within or very close to the study corridor, with the Iron Age and Romano-British periods being the best represented. Nine areas identified as being of high archaeological significance by Hertfordshire County Council Planning Department, two of which incorporated Scheduled Ancient Monuments, were affected by the route proposals.
