Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of a drainage trench at the site of Godalming Wharf, which had been constructed shortly after 1760. The trench revealed that the surface of the wharf had been made up of imported chalk, probably in the 1760s, and that the bank may have been altered in the 1830s. The original edge of the wharf was marked by a compacted chalk surface which had supported an access trackway along the river. To the south of this lay an area which had been used to store coal, tiles and pipes in 1900. A concrete foundation was observed which probably represented the edge of the storage area, or 'pens'. The wall had probably been constructed at some time after 1832. It was not certain when the area had first been used for coal storage - this may have always been its use. The archaeological evidence observed within the trench largely supported the historical chronology. [Au(adp)] |
