Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during several phases of groundworks at a construction site which lay to the north of the medieval town of Milborne Port, and outside the presumed line of a ditch, located in 1995, which was believed to mark the northern boundary of the Saxon town. The site, which was located adjacent to the street frontage, was thought to have potential for evidence of medieval or later occupation outside the limits of the town at this time. During the watching brief, it was established that only a small corner in the western part of the site had escaped complete truncation by post-medieval or modern quarrying, and that the truncation continued across to the street frontage. Within the western part of the site, a remnant hearth or oven base of post-medieval date and a large medieval pit were recorded. The pit contained fragments of animal bone and three sherds of medieval pottery. Post-medieval tile was recovered from the hearth/oven base. [AIP] |
