Abstract: |
A geoarchaeological evaluation was undertaken. A single borehole was sunk using a cable percussive drilling rig. U100 core samples were taken through the deposits. The stratigraphy found consisted of organic silts and clays dating from around 6000 BP to 3000 BP (Late Mesolithic / Early Neolithic to Late Bronze Age periods) overlying gravels and capped by inorganic clays. Palynological analysis was particularly fruitful and found evidence of both the elm and lime declines, together with evidence for associated woodland clearance and cereal production that was likely to have taken place with a few hundred metres from the site, though not on the site itself. Brick fragments at the peat/inorganic clay interface at the top of the peats may have related to medieval occupation and the flood events that documentary evidence claimed had led to the abandonment of the area in the early 15th century. The evaluation provided an outline, in combination with other geoarchaeological investigations in the area, of the changing palaeoenvironment from the Late Mesolithic to Bronze Age periods. The samples obtained from the evaluation held potential to provide a more detailed picture that might enable the nature and timing of human activity in the locality and its relationship to the evolving floodplain environment to be better understood. In the light of the revised understanding of the archaeological potential of the site the report concluded that the impact of the proposed development was likely to be minimal. [Au(abr)] |
