Abstract: |
A desk top study of two planning zones within central Birmingham was undertaken. The area researched covered almost one third of the medieval town, and included several archaeological sites and a timber-framed inn, a Grade II* Listed Building. Part of the Birmingham Moat had been recorded, along with substantial walls which may have been part of a 13th century hall within the manorial complex. The probable foundations of a medieval chapel had been observed, and evidence of 13th and 14th century pottery production had been recorded at two sites. Post-medieval features and evidence of 17th century industrial activity had also been found. It was concluded that an archaeological response to development proposals would be necessary across the whole site, with the possible exception of one area. [AIP] |
