Abstract: |
Trial trenching was undertaken on the site of the proposed 'Millennium' Country Park at Stewartby. No archaeological fieldwork had been carried out in this area previously though the site was adjacent to an area of cropmarks of presumed prehistoric date and close to the medieval village of Marston Moretaine. A total of 71 trial trenches were excavated across the site. A a significant concentration of archaeological features was discovered on the low lying land in the vicinity of Elstow Brook to the west. Some of these features produced finds of Late Iron Age date, spread over an area of c.2.5ha. In addition, early-middle Saxon occupation debris was recovered from at least two trenches within the general area of Iron Age activity. [AIP] |
