Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken during the manual excavation of a geotechnical test pit. A medieval pit was recorded. The primary fill produced a near complete pottery vessel dated to c.16th century. On the northern side of the pit a stakehole void had been driven through the primary deposit, suggesting that the pit had needed to be revetted during its use. The pit was apparently re-cut, as the secondary fills produced residual pottery dating to 1400-1550. Sealing the pit fills was a post-medieval layer, which had been substantially truncated by later features. A probable pit was cut into this layer. These deposits were truncated sequentially by two large post-medieval refuse pits, the earliest of which contained early 17th century pottery. These were sealed by a layer probably representing a courtyard surface which was cut by the construction cut for a 19th century brick soakaway structure\n[Au(adp)]\n |
