Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the excavation of four engineering test pits. They revealed a natural sequence of sandy gravels which, to the east of the site, was overlain by brickearth. To the west of the area there was a large modern intrusion up to 3.3m deep which had been backfilled with debris from the demolition of a post-medieval building. The full dimensions of this cut were not revealed due to the limitations of the test pit excavations, but this sequence of events may have related to the demolition of a Methodist Church which occupied this area of the site. All the pits contained modern material in their upper fills indicative of a period when the site was used as wasteland. [Au(adp)] |
