Abstract: |
Based on previous investigations in the area, and the proximity of the Manor House (the site of which is probably of 16th-century or earlier origin), it was thought possible that undisturbed medieval or earlier archaeological deposits or features might survive on the site. In the event, no deposits or features were encountered within the trial trenches, all of which contained varying deposits of colluvium (hillwash) above in situ natural bedrock. The colluvium contained charcoal, shellfish remains, and pottery dating from between the medieval period and the 18th century. Much of this material would have been introduced to the fields upslope during manuring episodes and washed down onto the site. [Au(adp)] |
