Abstract:
Assessment identified that the proposed development area had only been substantially developed since the mid-19th century, with most of the assessment area largely surviving as agricultural land until the 1860s when it became a junction of the Midland Railway and the GWR with the station and goods yards being built on what had formerly been market gardens and brick yards. It was suggested that development, although dependent on its nature and scale, would have minimal impact because the only recorded structures on the part of the site proposed for development were either agricultural outbuildings, brick kilns or railway buildings. The area of the street frontage, developed since the early 19th century, was thought to be of low archaeological potential due to the disturbance caused by 19th century development. The major area of interest on the site was the preserved mid-19th century road and shop premises beneath Lawrence Hill, although access to that area was not gained during the assessment. [Au(adp)]
