Abstract: |
A desk top assessment of a proposed development site which lay on one of the principal routes from medieval Birmingham was undertaken. Metalworking industries had existed in the area from the late medieval period onwards. A previous evaluation near the site had revealed islands of medieval deposits surviving between areas of later disturbance. Several late 19th and early 20th century buildings lay on the site, including the former Walker Marine Engineering Works, which was recorded as a Grade A building on the City Council Local List. It was recommended that the buildings should be recorded, some by photography and some by a more detailed survey, and that more site-specific documentary research and an evaluation should be carried out.
