Abstract: |
The assessment identified that Roman settlement had occurred at Middlewich, and that its salt springs had probably been in use since the 1st century AD. Middlewich was recorded as an urban salt-producing centre in the Domesday Book, and medieval remains had been excavated at several sites. Property boundaries at the proposal site were probably post-medieval, although they may have respected earlier burgage plots. Visual inspection identified building remains associated with a 19th century inn, and outbuildings, which may have related to a 19th century tannery. [AIP] |
