Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of a pipeline, which passed close to a site where an Early Iron Age settlement and evidence of Late Bronze Age, Roman and Saxon activity had been recorded. The Scheduled earthwork remains of Prittlewell Camp, a monument of unknown origin where medieval pottery had been found, lay in the vicinity, and Romano-British salt-manufacturing sites had been recorded along a nearby river. Examples of dispersed church-hall complexes and isolated high status farmsteads also occurred in the area. During the watching brief, a substantial quantity of oyster shell and 12th and 13th century pottery was found to the east of Smithers Farm. Further ground reduction was undertaken in an area to the west of the pipe trench, and a possible pit and a pit or linear feature containing oyster shell and pottery were revealed. Residual sherds of Roman pottery were present, and a sherd of Mill Green ware dated to the mid-13th to mid-14th century was found in the topsoil. It was concluded that the features were likely to have been associated with the nearby Prittlewell Camp. [AIP]
