Abstract: |
A programme of building recording was undertaken within the lower stage of a 14th century bell tower which was a Listed Building, in advance of the conversion of the space for use as a rare book store. Evidence for putlog holes and probable building lifts within the fabric of the walling was observed, and the structure of the first stage timber floor was recorded. Excavations involving the removal of the stone slab floor and below-ground deposits within the tower were also monitored archaeologically. A sequence of deposits similar to that observed during an earlier evaluation was noted, and two late medieval ceramic fragments were recovered. The earliest layer encountered may have represented the top of the sequence of medieval filling of the void at the base of the tower. No trace of the city wall, or of a bastion thought to underlie the tower, was observed. [Au(adp)] |
