Abstract: |
This document was the final report of an archaeological programme of works undertaken on the site of development at St. Paul's Hospital. The works were undertaken in two phases, the first being a six-trench evaluation, the second being a watching brief conducted during development. Three main phases were identified across the site. The latest consisted of demolition, levelling and foundation deposits relating to the erection of the building. The second was post-medieval activity consisting of 18th century foundations, domestic pitting and a buried soil horizon. The earliest securely dated phase straddled both the medieval and early post-medieval periods when the site was part of St. Giles Fields, including one linear and six pit features. There was also residual evidence of probable Saxon occupation. [Au(abr)] |
