Abstract:
Archaeological trial trenches (34) were excavated in order to provide a sample of an area prior to a proposed development. The results revealed the presence of significant archaeological remains within the eastern most third of the site. Substantial ditches, dating to the Early Iron Age were recorded in Trenches 27, 28 and 33, confirming the presence of the potential enclosure identified by crop mark and geophysical survey evidence. Significant re-cutting of the main enclosure ditch, a possible terminus suggesting an entrance and the insertion of a later enclosure ditch on a lesser scale, indicated that there were at least three major phases of activity. Two further possible prehistoric ditches were revealed in Trench 34, located within the interior of the enclosure, along with a substantial feature of uncertain function, recorded on Trenches 27 and 34. A small quantity of prehistoric pottery dating from the early Iron Age was recovered. Medieval activity dating to the 13th or early 14th centuries was also revealed. A series of shallow gullies were recorded which were probably the remains of medieval ploughing or water eroded channels. A large irregular feature encountered was interpreted as a dew pond. Evidence for post-medieval drainage was encountered as well as a field boundary. In summary whilst sub-surface features were recorded across the site, those of archaeological significance were confined to the easternmost third of the site, relating to an enclosure of Early Iron Age date. This and associated features were of high archaeological significance. [Au(adp)]
