Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed redevelopment of the site. Probable archaeological deposits and features consisted of prehistoric land surfaces and peat deposits, on which good organic survival of environmental indicators for the Holocene may have occurred, sealed by alluvium deposited as a result of rising river levels between the later prehistoric and post-medieval periods. It was possible that some wooden structures such as jetties or barge wrecks of 18th or 19th century date may be encountered. The use of the site for pasturage until the mid-19th century and later 19th century developments was unlikely to have resulted in the presence of major archaeological structures. To the north of Chelsea Creek the impact of the present and previous buildings and structures associated with the generating station was likely to have been considerable. However, it was in this northern area, where the underlying gravels were deeper, that potentially the best environmental material may be located. To the south of Chelsea Creek the impact of buildings associated with the generating station was likely to have been much less and consequently archaeological survival was likely to have been greater.
