Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed mineral extraction site. Cropmarks had been observed on aerial photographs of the site, and possible medieval ridge and furrow had been noted. A geophysical survey was undertaken, but few potential archaeological features were identified. Many of the potential features could not be located within the evaluation trenches, although linear ditches and a possible ring ditch were recorded. The latter may have been a small ritual or funerary monument of Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date. Circular cropmarks recorded nearby may have indicated a small cemetery. A pit containing probable Early Neolithic pottery lay near the ring ditch. It was concluded that some cropmarks may have had a geological origin, whilst others may have been truncated by recent agricultural activity. Further archaeological work in the areas of the prehistoric features was recommended. [AIP] |
