Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of a new basement area, at a development site where early 17th/18th century pottery had been recorded within rubbish pits or garden soil during monitoring of earlier trial pits, in 1997. A post-medieval well and a 19th century pit were observed during the 1998 watching brief. The well had probably dated from the 18th century development of Lincoln's Inn Fields, although a 16th-17th century date could not be ruled out. It was concluded that the absence of early archaeological features semed to support documentary sources, which indicated that the area had remained relatively undisturbed until the end of the 17th century. This was supported by the pottery assemblage, which was exclusively post-medieval. However, early features may have been removed during the construction of the original property or during later renovations. [AIP] |
