Abstract: |
A desk-top assessment of the proposed site of an extension to the National Portrait Gallery was undertaken. A small number of prehistoric and Roman artefacts had been found in the surrounding area. Two Roman wells, early medieval rubbish pits and pottery had also been recorded. Medieval conduits had lain in the area, and several buildings had been documented, including two inns, a chapel and a possible hospital. The site lay on part of a post-medieval burial ground. It was concluded that an evaluation would be necessary. [AIP] |
