Abstract: |
Two trial trenches were excavated suggesting the following stratigraphic sequence. Medieval occupation on the site, including possible structures and surfaces; a period of dereliction and disuse following abandonment of the medieval structures, including robbing of the remaining building materials down to foundation levels, probably taking place between the mid 12th and mid 15th centuries; levelling of the site and raising of the ground level, possibly in the mid 14th-mid/late 15th centuries; landscaping and development of the site taking place mainly in the modern period. In view of the historical importance of this part of the city, it was considered essential that, if the proposed development was to go ahead, further archaeological work be carried out to record any archaeological remains.
