Abstract: |
Assessment of land proposed for development by The University of Bristol Tyndall Avenue identified that the proposal area, prior to the creation of Thomas Tyndall's ornamental park in the mid-18th century had been part of a group of small fields and enclosures created out of open gorse covered downland. In 1642 the area north of the site was crossed by a chain of defensive forts and ditches, with the Windmill Hill (later Royal Fort) lying adjacent to the study area on its southwestern side. A defensive ditch connected this fort with Colston's and Priors Hill forts to the east. Based on evidence from previous archaeological investigations in adjacent areas it was felt that evidence for the survival of archaeology in the study area was inconclusive, although this did not preclude the possibility of features or artefacts associated with the Civil War surviving in the study area.
