Abstract: |
Rapid archaeological recording was carried out within the Royal Gunpowder Factory following the removal of 300-800mm of contaminated topsoil, necessitated by the proposed construction of a road. Although the remains exposed were to be preserved in situ, the opportunity was taken to record them whilst access was available. Lower Island had contained a purpose-built black powder factory comprising various mills for incorporation, glazing, pressing etc. The archaeological recording helped to provisionally identify twenty-three structural features, dating from various phases of gunpowder production, which were in use from c. 1801, possibly until the construction of the M25 motorway. The recorded structures were all of brick or concrete, and included foundation walls, spreads of brick rubble, a probable brick floor, culverts, the edges of canals/leats and various moorings.
