Abstract: |
Work at 16 and 17 north Cross Street recovered evidence for early post-medieval timber-framed buildings on both properties. Fragments of a rare 17th or early 18th century horticultural urn were found residually in a later pit. This urn had elaborate relief decoration and had a white external treatment to make it imitate stone. Its presence suggests that Gosport contained elaborate gardens in some of its back-land areas before about 1700, but pressure on space led to them being largely built over many of them during the 18th and early 19th centuries.
