Abstract: |
The evaluation revealed a probable medieval plough soil containing pottery of the 11th-12th centuries, which overlay a number of pits and ditches which produced pottery of similar date, along with animal bone, burnt clay and fragments of Niedermendig lava quern. The features lay towards the crest of a slope overlooking the site of Springhead Roman Town. A flint flake and burnt flints, of probable prehistoric date, and three sherds of Roman pottery were also recovered, but this material was associated with medieval or later pottery and was therefore residual in character.
