Abstract:
An archaeological desktop assessment was undertaken on the site, which within a region rich in archaeology of all periods. Detailed investigations had taken place on several sites nearby, indicating a complex and interwoven landscape, such as a later Iron Age cremation cemetery, extensive Roman field systems and middle Saxon grubenhause. Ring ditches identified by aerial photographs imply prehistoric activity, but it is possible that the area was not inhabited at this time. The survival of prehistoric archaeology in the area should, however, definitely not be discounted. Cropmarks and limited excavation indicated that the site lay within an area of relatively dense settlement and farming in the Iron Age and Romano-British periods. The latter was characterised by small settlements and larger villa complexes provisioning the fort and town of Great Chesterford to the west. Although the site itself had no finds spots SMR entries to the north were widespread. Subsidiary settlements, like those suggested by the cropmark enclosures, may have lain within the area of proposed development and the fact that Saxon and medieval settlement was located nearby ensured that these too should not be discounted.
