Abstract: |
Four trenches were excavated within the Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM 44) of Clifford's Fort, North Shields. This was part of the first phase of a trial trench programme to assist in the master planning of anticipated redevelopment in this highly sensitive location. The investigation established the level of the gun platforms, the partial survival of the north wall of the fort and the walls of the central Keep. There was evidence of industrial activity, possibly associated with salt panning, predating the post-medieval fort. Samples of industrial residues were taken, but these were awating analysis by a specialist. [Au(adp)] |
