Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of construction works for an extension to Victoria Dock Primary School. The school was located within the area of the former Hull Citadel; a massive triangular artillery fortress constructed in the 17th century guarding the confluence of the River Hull and the Humber. The evaluation identified two phases of construction of the defensive earthen rampart on the north-eastern side of the Citadel although the outside bank of the rampart was beyond the limit of excavation. An area of the Citadel's interior surface was within the evaluation trench and no evidence for buildings or structures other than a brick drain were identified. In view of the limited impact of the proposed extension on deposits of later 19th century, no further archaeological work on the site was recommended. [Au(abr)] |
