Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site was undertaken. The proposed works would involve the construction of a steel frame to support two floors which were to be added to an existing structure. Many sites of archaeological interest had been recorded in the near vicinity on the SMR, although prehistoric remains had comprised only isolated finds and a Bronze Age pit. Evidence of Roman activity in the area was also limited. Durig the medieval period, the site had lain within the garden of the priory of St Bartholomew the Great, until at least 1562. Evidence of ditched enclosures which had been abandoned by AD 1300 had been excavated to the south of the site. It had been tentatively suggested that these may have related to the foundation of the priory; a spate of construction in chalk masonry appeared to have occurred between 1250 and 1350, and the alignment of the new structures seemed to have respected those established by the earlier enclosure ditches. The immediate vicinity of the proposal site appeared not to have been developed unitl the first half of the 17th century, and documentary sources referred to the area as having become run down by the 18th century. It was noted that the existing basement slab had truncated the proposal site to a depth of c. 1.6m below the original upper level of the natural deposits. The proposed alterations to the building would require the construction of a new foundation for the lift core, and four pad foundations for additional columns. The potential impact of these foundations would be localised, and it was considered unlikely that they would have a detrimental effect on archaeological remains. [Au(adp)]
