Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that significant archaeological remains had been recorded within the site and in the surrounding area in the 19th and 20th centuries. Occasional prehistoric finds had also been recorded. At the site itself, discoveries had included tessellated pavements, roads, timber and stone buildings, floors and rubbish pits of Roman date. A medieval graveyard was thought to have lain in the western part of the proposal area. Construction of the existing buildings at the site was expected to have left some of the undiscovered archaeological resource intact, as discrete areas between complex arrangements of pad footings. An archaeological mitigation strategy, involving an evaluation and the full excavation of surviving deposits where appropriate, was proposed. [AIP] |
