Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of an office development identified that Mesolithic artefacts had been found at two sites in the vicinity, and that Neolithic finds and refuse deposits had been recorded. Early/Middle Bronze Age features, Late Bronze Age settlements, Iron Age and Roman artefacts and a possible Roman settlement had also been found. Medieval and post-medieval activity in the area had been documented, and medieval pottery had been found. Evidence of post-medieval occupation and of a kiln had been recorded to the north-east and to the east of the proposal site respectively. A previous borehole survey of the site indicated that quarrying had taken place, which would have destroyed any archaeological evidence in the affected areas. However, a watching brief carried out during the excavation of test-pits had recorded deposits with a general potential for archaeological remains. It was concluded that the site had a moderate potential for Bronze Age remains, as well as potential for evidence of agricultural activity associated with the medieval and post-medieval glebe of St. Paul's Church.
