Abstract: |
A desk based assessment of a proposed development site within the grounds of a hospital identified that Roman pottery and features, Neolithic flints and medieval pottery had been recorded in the vicinity, and that a medieval village lay 650m to the south east. A chapel lay on the site, but this had not been referred to prior to 1928; no evidence of associated burials existed. It was concluded that any archaeological remains on the site were likely to have been disturbed or destroyed during construction of the original workhouse in 1851, and by subsequent additions to the hospital complex. Further archaeological investigation was not recommended. [AIP] |
